Adjustable Rate Mortgage (ARM)

A mortgage agreement with interest costs tied to a short- or intermediate-term interest rate index such as rates on United States Treasury bills or notes. Rate adjustments are made at intervals and the premium over the index rate may vary over the term of the mortgage. Also called Variable Rate Mortgage, Floating Rate Mortgage.
