Extension Risk

(1) The risk or cost associated with slower than anticipated repayment of mortgages either because the underlying mortgage pool has unusual characteristics or because interest rates have remained too high to stimulate repayment or refinancing. (2) Corporate debt has extension risk if rates rise prior to an expected refinancing date which is prior to the debt's ultimate maturity. Compare to Reinvestment Risk.
