Gray Market

As the name suggests, a market whose existence might be outside the traditional regulatory framework, though probably not, strictly speaking, illegal. Gray markets spring up when local regulations prohibit the transfer of certain ownership interests, particularly from domestic to foreign investors, or in advance of a public offering when shares may trade on a when-issued basis in advance of the availability of actual shares for sale.
