Hedge Fund

A private pool of assets managed intensely and often aggressively. A wide variety of financial instruments may be used and the managers of the fund are typically paid a percentage of any profits. In spite of the name, many such funds do little or no hedging, and risk exposures vary greatly. Funds offered in the United States have a limited number of holders (usually limited partners), and partners must meet certain requirements in terms of net worth, minimum investment, etc.
