Indifference Curve Tangent to the Efficient Frontier Plotted in dimensions of expected return and standard deviation, a curve connecting all combinations of expected return and standard deviation to which an investor is indifferent, because all these combinations convey the same amount of expected utility. This curve is typically positively sloped and convex (with expected return on the vertical axis), and its point of tangency with the efficient frontier marks the investor's optimal portfolio. See Optimal Portfolio.
