Parallel Loans

An early form of swap in which a party in country A made a loan denominated in currency A to a party in country B. The party in country B, in turn, made a loan in currency B to the party in country A. This parallel loan structure has largely been abandoned in favor of notional swaps with netting agreements which expose the parties to substantially less credit risk.
