Risk-Controlled Arbitrage

A complex risk management strategy practiced by some savings institutions. The bank buys mortgages financed with short-term borrowings, swaps the mortgage cash flows, and uses collars to reduce various components of interest rate and prepayment risk. Many thrifts who used these techniques found their position was neither risk-controlled nor an arbitrage.
