In contrast to the primary market in which new security issues are sold to investors, the secondary market is the traditional exchange or over-the-counter market in which previously issued securities are bought and sold by individual and institutional holders with brokers and dealers as intermediaries. Also called After-Market. See also Primary Market, Third Market, Fourth Market.
