Securities Lending

A carefully collateralized process of loaning portfolio positions to custodians, dealers, and short sellers who must make physical delivery of fungible positions. Securities lending can reduce custodial costs or enhance annual returns by a full percentage point or more in some markets at some times. Improvements in securities settlement procedures and systems to facilitate securities lending tend to reduce lending premiums over time. See also Stock Loan Contracts.
