Short Position

(1) A position that appreciates in value when the underlying market price decreases. Examples include selling a stock short, selling a future, buying a put, or selling a call. (2) The position of the stock or futures short seller or of the writer or seller of an option contract. Note the anomalous position of the short put which benefits from an increase in the price of the underlying.
