Systematic Risk

Risk associated with the movement of a market or market segment as opposed to distinct elements of risk associated with a specific security. Systematic risk cannot be diversified away; it can only be hedged. Within the context of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM), exposure to systematic risk is measured by Beta. See also Diversification, Non-Systematic Risk.
