(1) In the United Kingdom, volume. (2) In a portfolio, usually calculated as (purchases + sales) / (beginning value + ending value). If a portfolio has an average turnover of 50 percent by this measure, approximately half the securities (in a portfolio with modest contributions and withdrawals) are replaced with new positions each year.
