Data Mining

Examining a large number of economic or financial variables, usually in a time series format, until the researcher finds one or more variables or relationships with apparent predictive ability but which, in fact, may result from the random arrangement of data. Often, the illusory predictive value will disappear when the variable or relationships are applied to new data. Also called Data Snooping. See also Hold-Out Period.
