Dematerialization

Replacement of a physical or substantial item with electronic signals or bits in a memory register. Dematerialization in financial markets often occurs in stages. A stock certificate may be replaced by an accounting entry that can be printed out on demand and ultimately by an all-electronic record. Any financial instrument including money can be dematerialized. See also Electronic Money.
